KING CITY (pop. 986) was settled in 1856 along the St. Joseph-Ottumwa (Iowa) freight trail by blacksmith John Pittsenbarger. The name of Petersburg was rejected when Pittsenbarger applied for a post office name due to an existing Petersburg in Boone County. U.S. Postmaster General Rufus King submitted his name instead, which was approved and applied to the town when it was platted in 1869. The arrival of the St. Joseph & Des Moines Railroad in 1878 helped establish King City as a shipping point. A focal point of interest is the Tri-County Museum featuring local historical items, large farm equipment, a caboose and more. King City High School is the home of the Wildkats. The town also has a municipal swimming pool, baseball, tennis court and rodeo grounds. Nearby are King Lake Wildlife area and the 29-acre Limp Community Lake known for bass, bluegill and catfish.
