BUCHANAN COUNTY
Agency
Access is 1 mile east of the town of Agency on Highway H, just where the highway
crosses the Platte River. This is a 1-acre area with no boat ramp.
Agency Conservation Area
is 3 miles east on Highway DD off Highway 29, and .5 mile east on County Road 322. This is
a 94-acre area on the Platte River.
Belcher Branch Lake
Conservation Area is east on Highway DD off Highway 29, then south on County Road
330. This is a 57-acre lake on 405 acres of mainly cropland (262 acres).
Bluffwoods Conservation
Area is 9 miles south of St. Joseph off Highway 59. Turn southeast at the Highway
Department directional sign, cross the railroad tracks, and go about 1 mile to the area.
This is a 2,282-acre area (mainly forestland) with a scenic overlook, 2.5 mile hiking
trail, 2-mile horseback riding trail and picnic areas. Goodell Memorial Annex
to Bluffwoods in about 7 miles south of St. Joseph on Highway 59. This is 63 acres of
forestland.
Burton Bridge Access
is 1.5 miles east on Highway MM off Highway DD near Faucett, then east on County Gravel
Road 342. This is a 16-acre area on the Platte River with no boat ramp.
Arthur Dupree Memorial
Conservation Area is 1.5 miles left off Highway 38 on 12th Street, 1 block north
on A Avenue, 6.1 miles north on County Road 2, then 1 mile right on County Road 3. This is
145 acres on the Missouri River.
French Bottom Access
is off Highway 229 at the junction of McArthur Drive and Waterworks Road. This is 1.5
acres on the Missouri River.
Kneib Memorial Conservation
Area is 3 miles west of Highway 59 on Lake Avenue, and .5 mile north on County
Gravel Road 221. Watch for the area sign. This 40-acre area has a 1-mile hiking trail and
native warm season grass demonstration plats. It is composed mainly of old pastures or
fields.
Lewis and Clark Fish
Hatchery is .5 mile west of Highway 45 on Highway 138. This 44-acre area has 16
acres of hatchery ponds and tours are available. The area is sometimes visited by pelicans
and double crested coromorants.
Pigeon Hill Conservation
Area is east on Highway 169 (off Highway 29) to Highway O. From Highway O, turn
west on Highway FF, and watch for the cantilever sign. This is a 336-acre area and is home
to the National Bowhunting Club's annual competition. There also is a fire-arms range and
a 1-mile hiking trail.
The main entrance to St. Joseph Urban
Conservation Area is on 32nd Street between Faroan and Messanie streets. This is
an 85-acre area of old fields (65 acres) and forestland (20 acres).
Saxton Access is 4
miles east of St. Joseph on Highway 36, 2 miles south on Highway C, and .5 mile west on
Saxton/Easton Road. This is 5 acres with no boat ramp on the Platte River.
To reach Sunbridge Hills Conservation
Area, take the Highland exit off Highway 229 east to Huntoon Road. Go north on
Huntoon and watch for the cantilever sign. This is a 223-acre area on the Missouri River.
There is a 4-mile hiking trail. Caroline Sheridan Logan Memorial Wildlife
Area is next to Sunbridge Hills. It is a 40-acre forested area.
