ATCHISON COUNTY
Brickyard
Hill Conservation Area is east of I-29 on Highway A, then east on Road RA. This
2,262-acre area includes Charity Lake (equipped with boat ramps) and two ponds, which
together provide 15 acres of fishable water. Natural areas include 41 acres of the
Brickyard Hill Loess Prairie. The area has three maintained trails extending 4.8 miles, a
shooting range and two archery ranges.
To get to Hoot Owl Bend Access,
take Highway 111 west off I-29 to Highway E. Continue west on E and turn west again on
Highway U. This 8-acre area and access on the Missouri River (no boat ramp) is off Highway
U.
Langdon Bend Access
is west of I-29 on Highway 111, west on Highway E, then west on Highway U. The Missouri
River extends .25 mile through this 13-acre area. The area is mainly forestland and old
pastureland. Thee is a boat ramp.
Star School Hill Prairie
Conservation Area is east of I-29 on Highway 136 and 12 miles north on Highway
275. On this 129-acre area, a loess hill prairie provides habitat for 12 plant species and
two animals species on the Rare and Endangered Species lists. A hiking trail extends 1.1
miles.
Tarkio Prairie Conservation
Area is 7 miles east of Westboro off Highway C. This 160-acre area contains a
57-acre natural area, which features a diverse prairie flora on loess and glacial till
soil. Tarkio Creek runs through the area, and three ponds provide 3 acres of fishable
water. Two nature trails extend 1.5 miles over natural and grass terrain.
Watson Access is
west of I-29 on Highway A and north on Highway BB. This 4-acre area is an access on the
Nishnabotna River. It is equipped with a boat ramp.
